It doesn’t get much more Melbourne than a green tram, this scene depicts the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Street with the old GPO (now H&M) in the background. I’d taken an image of the girl with the red hair earlier and incorporated it this scene as something of a focal point and a device for the viewer’s eye to linger as it moves around the painting. I omitted all the sharp lines and detail in the painting process resulting in an image as if seen through squinting eyes or an unfocused camera. The end result is more like a memory than a snapshot in time.
