This is Malak (not her real name). She came to Australia from Iraq with her husband so that he could pursue his studies. However, Malak also carried the burden of an abusive husband and endured years of domestic abuse. After finishing his studies, Malak’s husband returned to Iraq with their youngest daughter without her consent.
She faced an impossible decision; to stay in Australia with her older children, where she had found some safety and security, or risk going back to Iraq to be reunited with her daughter, knowing it would mean continued abuse from her husband. She made the decision to stay in Australia for her older children and sought asylum. Her request was granted, and she and her children have made Australia home. She has not seen her youngest daughter since the day she was taken from her.
Malak’s story is one of incredible strength and resilience. It also serves as a reminder of the complex challenges faced by many asylum seekers who come to this country to seek a better life.
