This is a work in a series of Leonard Cohen (1934-2016). Poet, author, songwriter and performing artist, Leonard lived on the island of Hydra in Greece where he wrote the song alluded to in this art work: "Bird on the Wire" (1968). Each pictographic work in the series is different, but may allude to the same song title. My connection to Leonard is from Hydra, where I have had a home since the 1980s.
NB: see SBS "So Long, Marianne" 8-part series on Leonard and Hydra on SBS On Demand as of November 2024
A page on musical "Harmonists" from the 1924 edition of Chambers' Encyclopaedia is used as the base for a drawing of Leonard's famously recognisable silhouette in suit and fedora hat. The bird is a Greek nightingale.
Square canvas 18 x 18 inches. Gallery wrapped (staple-free edge) and painted black around the edges if you wish to hang it without a frame.
