The Macaw family are the largest and some of most colourful parrots in the world. Their characteristic beaks and long tail feathers create a striking example of natures beauty and are a delight to paint.
I chose a dark background as a contrast to the bright green colours of the back feathers and also as call out to the dim lighting under the jungle canopy. I turned the head towards the viewer to highlight the feathers and the characteristics of the face.
I've recently been exploring the use of acrylic over the top of Watercolour and Gouache providing a slight gloss which gives the option of framing without glass. This piece is on board and is currently unframed.
