I was born in Russia, lived most of my life out of Russia, in the UK, Philippines, Oman and now Brisbane. I feel absolutely blessed having had the opportunity to experience this variety of cultures and I feel like my paintings reflect my background a lot. Some of my work is inspired by my childhood memories, some by the colour and geometric generosity of Middle East and Asia, and some by the peace and serenity of Australia.
Currently, Iโm studying History of Art in University of Queensland, where I find lots of inspiration for my own art practice, as well.
I agree with Maurice Vlaminck who said, โTo be a painter is not a business, any more than to be an anarchist, lover, racer, dreamer or prize fighter.โ Art is a journey for me. I like my freedom and the ability to change, according to the mood, surrounding, the weather and a sudden impulse or impression. I like to surprise myself, breaking rules and laws, exploring the new territories. I think the only crime the painter can commit is being dull.
I paint landscapes and still life, portraits and genre scenes from Christianity, a special part in my heart. I believe that we are here not to copy reality, but to express it, translate it into our own language.
