The 'Stone Wall' series is inspired by colours and textures in landscapes we call home. The frosted external texture of the internally shiny glass inspires a familiar feeling. The dusty, neutral colours are iconic of a rural Australian landscape, but also reference the building blocks of urban structures: homes, businesses, walls, pathways.
Colour and texture were large considerations in executing this glass artwork. The โStone Wallโ forms are blown glass, using two types of colour, one solid on the inside and sporadic dots on the outside. The hot forms are shaped somewhat rectangular, to then have the top part removed with use of a diamond saw after the glass has cooled, leaving a wide, angled opening. This thick rim is ground down and polished which reveals a beautiful optical effect drawing focus to the placement of coloured and clear glass within the walls of the piece. The pieces are finished by sand-blasting the outside surface to give a frosted, stone-like quality, but importantly keeping the internal surface untouched to embrace the distinctively shiny quality of glass.
'Stone Wall Collection #2' was a finalist in the Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize 2020, exhibited in the QBE Gallery at Adelaide Festival Centre. Pieces can be purchased individually for $550ea - please contact artist through the Bluethumb messaging/inbox function. Professional photos taken by Michael Haines.
