In the past, landscapes often featured in art works as a kind of back drop for compositions containing mythological, historical or biblical subjects. Landscape as a genre embracing nature for its own sake became more popular from the nineteenth century onward, and has continued to be an important subject for contemporary artists. These exciting, dynamic approaches to landscape capture the essence of nature and the energy it inspires.
