About the Curator

Brad Holland

Brad Holland’s formative years started early with a fascination in observational drawing from around the age of 6 and moved to oil painting by the age of 10. These early works involved formal studies with traditional techniques, primarily in landscape, that laid the foundation for his later experimentation towards abstraction.
Brad’s latest paintings take the learnings of ‘2020 Visions’ in a larger, more considered and compositionally balanced direction. The references to early computer graphics are still there, but the focus is now the interplay of colour and light utilising squares or rectangles that slowly pulsate and recede towards a contrasting singularity. Inspired by the characteristics of light and seeing, along with the colour field paintings of artists such as Rothko and Albers, his idea is to immerse the viewer in to a space where they can begin to see the mechanics of their own vision. Any emotional intensity felt when looking at these latest artworks will vary depending on each viewers personal experience and expectations.
