Stars are fixed points in the sky - they are always in the same place, in the same configuration, and in many ways, represent a reality. Constellations, by contrast, are constructed abstractions that are imagined by the human mind and treated as reality: we create a recognisable image from the configuration of these fixed points, and universally accept these as definite. Constellations have been recognised for thousands of years as a source of guidance and comfort; and for centuries, have provided us with a constant source of allure, imagination and curiosity.
"They Knew Once [Gemini]" reflects on the influences of P.L Travers’humble Queensland childhood, and how her personal interest in astrology, cosmology and her avid obsession with the night sky became transformed and enlivened in one of the most famous and beloved literary characters.
