Based in Sydney’s inner west, Carmen Hui is a self-taught artist with a love affair with coloured pencils. She has a keen interest in drawing since a young age and would spend endless hours drawing things surrounding her. Growing up, she didn’t know anyone with a creative background or how to become an artist, so opted for a career as a graphic designer instead. After working in the design industry for over ten years, she discovered her love of drawing again and started sharing her work via social media. She received a lot of encouragement along the way which gave her the courage to leave her job as a designer and concentrate solely on art. She has been working as an artist since 2015 and loved every single moment of it.
Carmen is interested in objects from the everyday and their emotional relationship with people, a subject that she has been exploring since childhood. Coloured pencils is her chosen medium because of its simplicity, she loves the meditative way one can slowly build up a drawing, it is also a medium which brings a lot of nostalgic comfort to Carmen.
Carmen's work has been featured in publications such as Peppermint, Frankie, Inside Out and County Life. She has also collaborated with commercial clients like Derwent, Twinings, Wacom and Officeworks.
