Based on a gouache sketch of the top of kunanyi, lutruwita (also know as Mount Wellington, Tasmania ) done in 2021, this painting is an impressionistic depiction of the diverse, low yet vibrant landscape of the top of that mountain.
Even though the vegetation on top of kunanyi is low and dense, there is when you look closely a vibrancy and colourfulness in the vegetation. See my Instagram account @bridie.amelia.art to find the photo that demonstrates this!
The painting is filled with colourful impasto brushstrokes to represent the landscape in an abstract impressionist style, using soft hues of green, pink, lavender, and earthy reds which dominate the foreground, suggesting blooming flora in a diverse and rich natural setting. The background transitions into gentle rolling hills, leading to distant rocky outcrops or cliffs rendered in earthy tones of beige, tan, and ochre. Rice paper collage underneath layers of paint adds texture in the bottom right corner.
The sky is painted in soft blues and whites, evoking a sense of peacefulness and openness, and contrasts nicely with the vibrant tones of the landscape below. The brushwork is loose and expressive, emphasising textures and impressions over detailed realism. Overall, the painting captures a joyful and serene feeling of being immersed in nature's abundance and colour.
