This painting is part of a series in which I am exploring my relationship with nature, and the feelings that a beautiful vista - be it the coast or the mountains - evokes. I start by collaging organic shapes made with gelli plate prints, then layer paint to build up texture and mood.
This piece is titled "Incoming," capturing the dynamic tension I feel when I see an impending storm. It's exciting and promises cool winds and rain, but also brings the potential for destruction.
Broad, sweeping brushstrokes of deep blues and greys dominate the sky, evoking a sense of movement and power as heavy clouds roll across the horizon. The scene is imbued with an energy that suggests nature’s unstoppable force, where the interplay of light and shadow conveys both drama and anticipation.
Beneath the dramatic sky lies a landscape rendered in earthy, textured tones of ochre and brown, grounding the scene with a sense of calm before the chaos. The horizon is softened with strokes of pale white and muted blue, adding depth and a sense of vastness. The painting feels alive and atmospheric, drawing the viewer into a moment of transition where nature’s quiet stillness meets the surge of an incoming storm.
