This piece builds on a body of work focusing on the architecture of Tokyo, Japan.
Following my trip to Japan in 2018, I became fascinated with architecture and it became the focus of many of my paintings. I like to strip down the detail and focus on the repeating patterns of man-made constructs. In the major cities of Japan, I noticed how often their stairwells were built on the exterior of the building, forming patterns in otherwise dull spaces. This idea formed the basis for this series of works.
It's the first one of it's size and completed on stretched canvas.
